There are five points on the compass: north, east, south, west, and the point where you are now.
~ Chinese proverb
As we look outward in all directions, we tend to forget that we do so from a point of view. In fact, we often are unconscious to the fact that viewpoint conditions everything we perceive and the actions that follow from those perceptions. Part of our practice, then, is remembering that we never experience the world directly but rather through the filter of our views.
Samma ditthi, or right view, is considered by many to be the most crucial factor of the Noble Eightfold Path. Right view, according to the suttas, consists of an understanding of the Four Noble Truths, particularly stress (suffering), its causes and its relief. It naturally leads to (conditions) Right Action. Right View is the push that causes the dominoes to fall in the direction of happiness rather than in the direction of suffering.
